The divine censorship policy. At 3 Nephi 26:6-11 Mormon states an editorial rule imposed on him by direct command: he has written 'a lesser part of the things which he taught the people' (26:8), while the plates of Nephi 'contain the more part' (26:7); the lesser part comes first 'to try their faith, and if it shall so be that they shall believe these things then shall the greater things be made manifest unto them' (26:9), withheld to condemnation if they will not (26:10); 'I was about to write them… but the Lord forbade it, saying: I will try the faith of my people' (26:11). This lesser-then-greater, faith-conditioned disclosure restates the doctrine Alma expounds at Alma 12:9-11 -- 'he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word' (12:10), 'until he know them in full' -- the doctrine of the lesser/greater PORTION OF THE WORD, which stands in the corpus at Alma 12:10-11. Other 'lesser part' occurrences -- Helaman 16:10, Mosiah 29:26, Mosiah 19:3 -- describe a minority of PEOPLE, not withheld revelation, so the doctrinal link is specifically to Alma 12:10-11. PARAPHRASE-level link (both ends quotable; not verbatim). Companion withheld classes: the children's utterances 'forbidden that there should not any man write them' (26:16), the 'unspeakable things, which are not lawful to be written' (26:18), and the three disciples' names 'forbidden' so Mormon 'write them not, for they are hid from the world' (28:25).
