At the Bountiful visitation the disciples ask the Lord to settle the church's name -- 'there are disputations among the people concerning this matter' (27:3) -- and he answers by pointing them to scripture already in hand: 'Have they not read the scriptures, which say ye must take upon you the name of Christ, which is my name?' (27:5). Within the record's own world the 'scriptures' that command taking the name are king Benjamin's covenant sermon, where the doctrine is first given -- 'I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ' (Mosiah 5:8) -- so the covenant sermon is here cited back as written scripture by its subject.
