Alma introduces his version as quotation: 'the Spirit saith: Behold, the ax is laid at the root of the tree; therefore every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be hewn down and cast into the fire' (Alma 5:52). The near-verbatim divergence is a tense shift only: 3 Nephi 14:19 states it in the present ('is hewn down, and cast'), Alma 5:52 in the modal future ('shall be hewn down and cast'). The Lord re-runs the formula twice more in the gospel-definition discourse at 3 Nephi 27:11 and 27:17. The clause is corpus-wide: it is the olive-tree allegory's verdict (Jacob 5:42, 5:46, 5:66; Jacob 6:7, whose 6:7-against-5:46 pair is registered on olive-tree-allegory.md) and it stands in the second-death frame at Helaman 14:18 (registered against Alma 5:35 as hel-atone-hewn-down). This record grounds only the hewn-down clause of Alma 5:52; the verse's opener, 'the ax is laid at the root of the tree', stands nowhere else in the Book of Mormon and nowhere in the Pearl of Great Price. Elsewhere in the corpus its nearest counterpart is D&C 97:7, 'The ax is laid at the root of the trees' (registered against Alma 5:52 as w4-dc97-ax-alma5); Matthew 3:10 and Luke 3:9 carry it with a different verb, 'the axe is laid unto the root of the trees'.
