Alma's sermon delivered first in the land of Zarahemla (Alma 5:1) poses the clause as a condition; from his garden tower in the city of Zarahemla, Nephi son of Helaman states it as the accusation and answers it — "It is because you have hardened your hearts". Reported as textual facts. The clause sounds twice more inside the same sermon (Alma 5:41, 5:57); Helaman 7:18 is its only occurrence beyond it.
