The Baptist-herald formula. Lehi foretells the future voice that would 'go forth and cry in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord' (1 Nephi 10:8); the Spirit re-voices the prepare-the-way call to Alma, who applies it to the congregation at 7:19. (1 Nephi 10:8 reads 'cry in the wilderness'; the participial 'crying in the wilderness' is verbatim in the four Gospels' Baptist passages, e.g. Matthew 3:3 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness', and — recounted 2026-08-10 at the D&C freeze — at D&C 88:66, which re-applies the same voice-of-one-crying construction to the Lord's own voice rather than the Baptist's.) Divergence: 'walk in his paths, which are straight' vs 'make his paths straight'.
