Lehi's dream introduces 'a mist of darkness' that causes path-walkers to lose their way and be lost (8:23). The vision in ch. 12 supplies the gloss: 'the mists of darkness are the temptations of the devil, which blindeth the eyes, and hardeneth the hearts of the children of men, and leadeth them away into broad roads, that they perish and are lost' (12:17). The angel's language at 12:17 extends the gloss beyond noun equivalence, specifying the mechanism (blinds eyes, hardens hearts, leads into broad roads) and echoing the outcome of 8:23 ('wandered off and were lost' / 'perish and are lost'). Note: 8:23 uses the singular 'mist'; 12:17 uses the plural 'mists' — same referent, slight number shift.
