Moroni's latter-day catalog (Mormon 8:28) restates Nephi's latter-day-churches indictment (2 Nephi 28:12): the corrupt institution itself 'lifted up' in pride. Distinctive shared feature -- BOTH verses make the CHURCHES the grammatical subject of 'lifted up' ('their churches are lifted up' / 'churches become defiled and be lifted up in the pride of their hearts'), and both pair it with become-corrupted / become-defiled. The phrase 'lifted up' is a common pride idiom recurring widely across the corpus, but the churches-as-subject occurs at exactly two verses: 2 Nephi 28:12 and Mormon 8:28 -- everywhere else it is persons / Gentiles / leaders / mountains that are lifted up (e.g. 2 Nephi 26:20 'the Gentiles are lifted up in the pride of their eyes'; 4 Nephi 1:24 'those who were lifted up in pride'). The SAME decay pattern is rehearsed historically in 4 Nephi 1:24-27 (pride onset 1:24 'those who were lifted up in pride' -> churches 'build up churches unto themselves to get gain' 1:26 -> 'many churches' 1:27). Disclosed 2026-08-10 at the D&C freeze: 4 Nephi 1:26's clause is now shared word for word by D&C 10:56, 'build up churches unto themselves to get gain, yea, and all those that do wickedly and build up the kingdom of the devil'. The counted churches-as-subject claim above is unmoved — no D&C verse makes the churches the subject of 'lifted up'.
