Book of Mormon Moroni 8:27
"the pride of this nation, or the people of the Nephites, hath proven their destruction except they should repent"
Book of Mormon Mormon 8:36
"I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts"

The riches-and-pride chain's closing verdict. Moroni 8:27 is MORMON's epistle (Moroni 8 = 'An epistle of my father Mormon,' 8:1); in its closing lines ('Behold, my son, I will write unto you again if I go not out soon against the Lamanites') Mormon names the cause of his nation's fall: 'the pride of this nation, or the people of the Nephites, hath proven their destruction except they should repent' -- the 'pride' the page has tracked since Jacob 2:13's coinage, now the proven cause, stated by the man who watched the nation die. Far end Mormon 8:36 is MORONI turning the same term on the latter-day reader: 'I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts'. The far end is Mormon 8:36 (chosen over 8:28 and 8:37): 8:36 is Moroni's direct second-person address to the reader and carries Jacob 2:13's spine phrase 'the pride of your hearts' verbatim; 8:37 drops the word 'pride' entirely ('ye do love money … more than ye love the poor') and is already registered as morm-riches-fine-apparel-catalog (8:37 <-> 2 Ne 28:13); 8:28 carries 'lifted up in the pride of their hearts' but is the far end of morm-tc-churches-lifted-up (8:28 <-> 2 Ne 28:12, two-churches.md) -- reusing it would collide. Cross-linked, no collision: morm-tc-churches-lifted-up (8:28 <-> 2 Ne 28:12) and morm-riches-fine-apparel-catalog (8:37 <-> 2 Ne 28:13) both sit in Mormon 8; my pair (8:27 <-> 8:36) is distinct from both. This is typed thematic / INTERPRETIVE, not shared-phrasing / textual. The strictly-shared lexis is 'the pride of' (25 verses in the record; 44 corpus-wide under a case-insensitive count, recounted 2026-08-10 at the D&C freeze, the odd member being Obadiah 1:3's verse-opening 'The pride of' — case-strict 43; common, not distinctive; the added carrier is D&C 98:20, which reads 'the pride of their hearts', the spine phrase this note says stands only on the 8:36 end within the pair); the spine phrase — 8:36 'the pride of your hearts' and 'the pride of their hearts' — stands only on the 8:36 end (8:27 reads 'the pride of this nation'); neither verse paraphrases the other (8:27 diagnoses the Nephite fall, 8:36 addresses the latter-day reader). Squarely the jac-riches-despise class. What remains textual: each verse's own content and the far-end choice; the pride-proved-destruction PAIRING is now offered as a weigh-this reading.
