Lehi's-generation valuation restated ~500 years on as accomplished fact: 5:21 prospective (plates' worth = preserving the commandments unto children), Mosiah 1:4 retrospective (engravings taught to children and children's children 'even down to this present time'). The commandments-unto-children chain is restated at 1:4; 1:3's 'were it not for these plates… suffered in ignorance' is the same valuation in negative form. Difference carried, not harmonized: 5:21 'preserve the commandments… unto our children' vs 1:4 'fulfilling the commandments of God' - transmission and obedience; transmission is the shared core.
