The identification of the 'I… this book' of 8:1 (and the narrator-I at 23:23, 27:11, 28:9, 28:20) with Mormon rests on sequence: WoM 1:3 ('abridgment from the plates of Nephi, down to the reign of this king Benjamin') + 1:9's announced continuation, with Mosiah standing next and opening in Benjamin's reign.
