Amaleki's third-person notice and Zeniff's first-person memoir match point for point: contention ('he caused a contention among them' / 'I contended with my brethren in the wilderness'), slaughter in the wilderness, survivors returning to the land of Zarahemla, second departure (Omni 1:29 / Mosiah 9:3). Omni never names Zeniff and Zeniff never cites Amaleki, so the identification is inference - kept interpretive deliberately, consistent with the existing open-uncertainties stance noted in mos-ammon-strong-mighty-leader ('convergent but unasserted').
