The phrase 'in the strength of the Lord' is a recurring battle-formula (Mosiah 9:17, 10:10; WoM 1:14; Alma 20:4, 46:20, 60:16, 61:18; 3 Nephi 4:10). The paired ends are same-epoch, both branches of the divided Nephite people: Zeniff's wars (Mosiah 9:17; 10:10 'we did go up in the strength of the Lord to battle') and Mormon's account of king Benjamin's defensive war (WoM 1:14). Mosiah 10:11 supplies the formula's stated negative: the Lamanites 'depended upon their own strength.' Mormon 2:26 adds the formula's own dark inversion — 'the strength of the Lord was not with us'.
