Both texts set the tree of life at a water-source: in 1 Nephi 11:25 the rod leads to the fountain of living waters, 'or to the tree of life'; in Revelation 22:1-2 a pure river of water of life proceeds from the throne, and the tree of life stands on either side of the river. What is textual: the co-location of tree and water in both. What is NOT textual, and is the interpretive step: that the two co-locations are the same image. The wording differs and both phrases have older sources — 'fountain of living waters' stands at 1 Nephi 11:25, Jeremiah 2:13 and 17:13; 'tree of life' is widespread in the corpus (Genesis 2:9, 3:22, 3:24; Proverbs 3:18, 11:30, 13:12, 15:4; Revelation 2:7, 22:2, 22:14; Moses 3:9, 4:28, 4:31; Abraham 5:9; and fifteen Book of Mormon verses). 1 Nephi glosses both tree and waters as the love of God, a gloss Revelation does not carry.
