The full formula 'a broken heart and a contrite spirit' occurs at exactly six verses in the corpus (recounted 2026-08-10 at the D&C freeze): 2 Ne 2:7 (Lehi, sole pre-3-Nephi antecedent), 3 Ne 9:20, 3 Ne 12:19, Ether 4:15 ('call upon the Father in my name, with a broken heart and a contrite spirit'), Moroni 6:2 (the church's baptism intake rule — 'they came forth with a broken heart and a contrite spirit'), and D&C 59:8, which makes the broken heart the sacrifice offered — 'offer a sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in righteousness, even that of a broken heart and a contrite spirit' — the same turn this record is registered on. ('contrite spirit' alone also at Hel 8:15; 'broken heart' alone at Jacob 2:10 - different constructions.) The turn: in Lehi's blessing the Messiah offereth himself a sacrifice for sin FOR those who have a broken heart; in 3 Ne 9:20, that sacrifice made, the offering is reversed - the worshipper's broken heart IS the sacrifice, and blood sacrifice is expressly retired the verse before ('ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood', 9:19; 'in me is the law of Moses fulfilled', 9:17).
