The editor's name, given bare in the Words of Mormon, is here traced to its origin: the land of Mormon, where Alma founded the church (Mosiah 18). This is the reader's first account of where the name 'Mormon' comes from. One divergence is reported as a textual fact, not a contradiction: the place took its name 'from the king' (Mosiah 18:4, i.e. king Noah of Mosiah 18:1), not from Alma; what 3 Nephi 5:12 credits Alma with is the founding of the church there (Mosiah 18:17, 'they were called the church of God, or the church of Christ, from that time forward'), not the naming of the land.
