The destruction executes Zenos's mode-list. 1 Nephi 19:11-12 catalogs the modes by which the Lord God would visit 'all the house of Israel' at the sign of the Redeemer's death -- 'thunderings and the lightnings of his power, by tempest, by fire, and by smoke, and vapor of darkness, and by the opening of the earth, and by mountains which shall be carried up' (19:11), 'the rocks of the earth must rend' (19:12) -- the whole marked 'saith the prophet Zenos' (19:12). 3 Nephi 8 enacts the list: tempest and thunder (8:6), sharp lightnings (8:7), fire (8:8), a mountain heaved up (8:10, the mountains-carried-up record), rocks rent (8:18), and here the vapor of darkness (8:20). The shared phrase 'vapor of darkness' is verbatim. Distribution: 'vapor of darkness' occurs at exactly three refs -- 1 Nephi 12:5 (Nephi's own vision of this destruction), 1 Nephi 19:11 (Zenos's mode-list, this pair), 3 Nephi 8:20 (the fulfillment). 1 Nephi 12:5 ('I saw multitudes who had not fallen') shares a SECOND contact with 3 Nephi 8:20 ('the inhabitants thereof who had not fallen') -- but that is a Nephi's-vision leg, NOT Zenos; it belongs to the messiah.md signs ledger, not registered here. DISTINCT from the two Samuel fulfillment pairs on samuel-the-lamanite.md (3 Nephi 8:18 <-> Helaman 14:22 and 8:23 <-> Helaman 14:27): different far end (1 Nephi 19, Zenos) and a mode Samuel's death-sign never names -- 'vapor of darkness' appears nowhere in Helaman 14.
