The tail — 'Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord' — is word-for-word but for orthography (Malachi 'LORD', the section 'Lord'). The head diverges substantively: Malachi's 'I will send you Elijah the prophet' becomes 'I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet' — the object of the sending shifts from the prophet to a priesthood, and the prophet becomes the means. Reported as a textual fact; what the change means is a separate interpretive question. The clause stands at five frozen verses: these two, 3 Nephi 25:5 (Malachi's wording), D&C 128:17 (which quotes Malachi by name), and Joseph Smith—History 1:38 (the section's wording).
