The Jaredite nation's opening verse fixes its origin at the confounding of tongues, in the same clause the Nephite record had already used to summarize the same people. The shared clause 'at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people' runs across three verses: Omni 1:22, Mosiah 28:17 ('the building of the great tower, at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people'), and Ether 1:33 here. The Nephite record thus described this people twice before Ether's own record supplied its first-person origin leg. The confounding is the text's own internal datum; whether it corresponds to the Genesis-11 tower is an external question outside this wiki's scope.
