The doctrinal back-link for the secret-combination file. Jacob (2 Nephi 9:9) had already fused three elements in one verse — the being who beguiled the first parents, 'secret combinations of murder', and 'all manner of secret works of darkness'. Helaman 6:26-30 unpacks that single verse into a genealogy: the same being who enticed the first parents (6:26), who plotted with Cain (6:27), who built the tower (6:28), who put it into Gadianton's heart (6:29), 'the author of all sin' (6:30). The phrase 'works of darkness' and 'secret combinations' both recur through the chapter (6:28, 6:30, 6:38). The first-parents clause has two other registered ends in the beguiled-parents chain: mos-abinadi-old-serpent and mos-abinadi-beguiled-parents (Mosiah 16:3 / 2 Nephi 2:18 family).
